솔밭 사이로 강물은 흐르고

 

 

오, 처녀 메리여,
새가 노래하는 이른 봄이면
피어나는 장미보다 더 아름다웠네.
솔밭 사이 강가에 사는 젊은 연인이 있었기에,
그녀의 마음은 즐겁고 행복한 생각으로 가득했으며,
기분 좋은 아침을 맞을 수 있었죠.

나무들의 새싹이 돋아 나고
새들이 지저귀는 어느 봄날,
찰리와 메리는 결혼했답니다.
하지만, 초가을에 찰리는 메리에게,
포도주가 익을 때쯤이면
솔밭 사이 강에서 돌아온다며 떠났죠.

황량한 위스콘신의 어느 이른 아침,
운명의 급류에 휩쓸려 마지막을 맞은
​그의 시체가 강 아래쪽
바위가 많은 물가에서 발견되었지요.
그곳은 강물이 조용히 잔물결을 짓고,
삼나무가 바람결에 속삭이는 곳이었습니다.

지금도 뗏목들은 강물을 따라 흐르고,
사람들이 차를 타고 오가는 그 길목에는
외로운 무덤이 하나 있는데,
화창한 아침이면 사람들이 그곳에 야생화를 심죠.
솔밭 사이의 강가에 살던
​젊은 두 연인들의 그 무덤에.

In Wisconsin dreary clime
When rode the fatal rapids
For that last and fatal time
They found his body lying
On the Rocky shore below
Where the silent water ripples
And the whispering cedars blow

Now every raft or lumber
That's come down, the chip away
There's a lonely grave that's
visited by drivers on their way
They plant the wild flowers upon it
In the morning fair and fine
It is the grave of two young lovers
From the river in the pines
